Basic Rider Class
Motorcycle Licensing
Do you dream of riding a motorcycle on Michigan's roadways? Completing either of two classes will help you obtain a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license.
- Motorcycle Safety: Basic Rider Course is for non-riders or riders with limited experience.
- Motorcycle Safety: Performance Based is for experienced but unlicensed motorcyclists.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation created the classes, which traffic safety experts widely acknowledge are the best introductions to motorcycling in the world.
You'll get to skip the state riding skills test if you successfully complete either class, which includes passing final written and riding skills tests. To obtain your motorcycle endorsement, you'll just have to pass a knowledge test at a Secretary of State office after successfully completing your WCC class.
Attendance and required equipment
If you're tardy, you will not be allowed in class. You must attend all class sessions and pass all written and riding skills tests to successfully complete the class.
Students in both classes must provide the following equipment:
- A long-sleeved shirt and long pants
- Leather over-the-ankle boots
- Full-fingered gloves
- Eye protection
- A motorcycle helmet approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Some loaner helmets are available for the basic rider class.
The instructor's decision on the acceptability of student-provided equipment is final.
Special registration instructions
If the class you want is full, you have two options beyond those normally available:
- Come to WCC on the day of the class. If a registered student does not show up, you may be allowed to register. Bring a credit card with you to pay for registration.
- Register for a motorcycle licensing class at another school or agency.
Program funding
The motorcycle safety education classes offered by WCC are conducted with state funds from a motorcycle safety grant administered by the Michigan Department of State. Licensing fees paid by Michigan's motorcyclists fund the grant.

Motorcycle Safety: Basic Rider Course One-Weekend Version
Prerequisite(s): You must be at least 15 and have a stage 1 or higher Michigan driver's license.
If you've never ridden a motorcycle, this class will teach you how. You'll learn the mental and physical skills needed to ride on public roads and become licensed. You'll ride two-wheeled manual-shift-and-clutch motorcycles provided by WCC on our riding range. This is our most physically and mentally intense version of the Basic Rider Course.
You must be able to balance and support a two-wheeled motorcycle and operate manual hand and foot controls for shifting and braking; have health insurance or be self-insured; and sign a liability waiver if you're 18 or older. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the liability waiver at the start of the class. The Michigan Secretary of State's office waives its required motorcycle rider skills test if you successfully complete this class. For more information, visit Motorcycle Licensing.

Motorcycle Safety: Performance Based
Prerequisite(s): You must be at least 15 and have a stage 1 or higher Michigan driver's license.
If you're an experienced but unlicensed motorcycle rider, this class is for you. You'll improve your riding skills and the class will help you get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license.
You must provide your own street legal, two-wheeled manual-clutch-and-shift motorcycle and show proof of motorcycle insurance. If the motorcycle isn't yours, you must have the owner's written permission to ride it. At the first class session, you must pass a basic riding skills test that involves starting, stopping, shifting, and turning. You must have health insurance or be self-insured. And you must sign a liability waiver if you're 18 or older. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the liability waiver at the start of the class. The Michigan Secretary of State's office waives its required motorcycle rider skills test if you successfully complete this class. For more information, visit Motorcycle Licensing.
